Dark Star Requiem: conversations on the development of a contemporary oratorio.

Snider Visiting Artist Andrew Staniland discusses the inspiration and development of his large-scale music theater work Dark Star Requiem. The piece is a large scale oratorio that sets specially commissioned poems that deal with HIV-AIDS through both African and American lenses. It will be premiered by Tapestry New Opera in June 2010. Dr Staniland will be joined by the creative team involved in the project: Jill Battson, poet;  Wayne Strongman, Managing Artistic Director of Tapestry; and Susan Worthington, Producing Director of Tapestry. The piece will be discussed in creative, social, and cultural contexts.

Dr. Djao’s latest book, A Blossom Like No Other, Li Qingzhao (~ 1084 – 1156 CE) of the Song dynasty is indisputably the most brilliant woman writer in Chinese history. This biography offers an insightful interpretation of her character and a new translation of some of her writings. Wei Djao’s English rendition consistently captures the poet’s elegance, refreshing originality and creativity. Dr. Djao will be speaking about Li Qingzhao and reading excerpts from her new book.
